A STITCH IN TIME

Haugar is pleased to present four artists who have all won acclaim for the way they incorporate textiles into their work. In often monumental installations the textile medium is woven together with other types of objects to create new expressions charged with meaning. These might range from a surrealistic take on desire, and ethnographically nuanced rituals, to a vision of an iconic image from art history. Recent years have seen a revitalisation of the textile medium among artists, and a typical characteristic has been that the traditional gender bias of textile art has been strongly challenged. At the same time the medium’s cultural and artistic threads that lead back in time are literally woven into the works as an ever-present, dynamic subtext. Historic perspectives, combined with a renewed fascination with old handicrafts, are integrated with impulses from recent movements such as postminimalism and Pattern and Decoration.
The exhibition is curated by Haugar’s Tone Lyngstad Nyaas, who has also written the catalogue text.
