In his lifetime, the American pop artist Andy Warhol
(1928–1987) ascended to the same star status within
the art world as Edvard Munch.
Haugar’s upcoming Munch exhibition seems a
fitting opportunity to bring the work of these two
artistic giants together with a presentation of the
series of paintings, drawings and silkscreen prints
by Warhol, that were directly inspired by some of
Munch’s most famous works – The Scream, Madonna,
Self-portrait with Skeleton Arm and the portrait of
Eva Mudocci.
Tidsrom: 05.06.2010 - 05.09.2010
Haugar’s summer exhibition for 2010 is a rare treat. The museum is presenting an exhibition of key works by Edvard Munch (1863 – 1944), all associated with Åsgårdstrand and, in particular, his intense, bittersweet experiences of love. This is one of the largest Munch exhibitions ever held in Norway outside of Oslo and Bergen.
Tidsrom: 20.03.2010 - 09.05.2010
This exhibition has been curated for Haugar’s premises by Åsmund Thorkildsen, director of Drammen Museum. For many years now, he has been advising Nordea Bank on its art collection, giving him detailed knowledge of its range and variety. Three years ago, he took part in the first presentation of this collection when it was exhibited at Høvikodden. He has now taken the opportunity to present it in a whole new light.
Tidsrom: 13.02.2010 - 02.05.2010
In recent years, the contemporary art world has shown a renewed interest in children’s toys, both as subject matter and a mode of expression. The exhibition HOLY TOY is curated by Haugar’s Tone Lyngstad Nyaas and has as its theme the use of toys, as interpreted by four unique artists. These artists approach the theme in a playful and often humorous way. However, references in their work also clearly reveal links to various topical social issues.
Tidsrom: 16.01.2010 - 07.03.2010
HOUSES includes two Norwegian photographers, both of whom have developed a distinct voice within what is labelled “Straight Photography”. What Haugar is looking to highlight here is their distinctive character and position within contemporary Norwegian photography.

AntArctica is Haugar’s contribution to Kulturminnevernåret ( Protection of Cultural Heritage Year), and focuses upon a number of Norwegian and international artists whose work relates to the serious effects of climate change in today’s world. Many of the participants have spent time aboard research ships on Arctic and Antarctic expeditions. There they have experienced the melting of the Polar Ice at first hand, and have reflected upon the worrying prognosis for the future, and the warnings articulated by climate researchers.

Hanne Christiansen was born in 1948 in Tønsberg
and now lives in Nøtterøy. She has held several solo
shows in Norway, as well as participating in a number
of group exhibitions in the Nordic countries. Her
work has been acquired by several important art
institutions and collections. This exhibition at Haugar
features both older and recent work.
Tidsrom: 27.09.2008 - 30.12.2008
This exhibition focuses upon a new generation of
Norwegian artists whose style might be termed
“realistic”. Realism is a genre that is widespread, and
is gaining impetus. It is reflected in the work of the
24 artists aged between 20 and 40 who have been
chosen to participate in this exhibition that showcases
a broad spectrum of media – painting, drawing,
computer art, sculpture, installation and video work.
Tidsrom: 20.09.2008 - 26.10.2008
Tidsrom: 06.09.2008 - 19.10.2008
During recent years, Annika Ekdahl has become
known as one of the most distinguished and original
textile artists in the Nordic countries. She was born
in Stockholm in 1955 and studied art in Gothenburg,
but now lives in a village in the far south of Sweden.
This is the first time that her monumental, meticulously
crafted tapestry weavings have been exhibited
in Norway.
Tidsrom: 24.05.2008 - 14.09.2008
With this exhibition, Haugar presents the first
complete, retrospective overview of Carl Nesjar’s
comprehensive artistic oeuvre. He has distinguished
himself as a painter, printmaker and photographer, but
it is his sculptural production that has left the deepest
mark upon the history of post-war art in Norway.
Tidsrom: 21.06.2008 - 24.08.2008
This themed exhibition aims to focus upon a subject matter that has largely been ignored in Norwegian art history: The city as an arena or meeting place between people and its role in cultural development. It was in fact the city that constituted the actual starting point for all the artists that contributed to the celebrated Norwegian landscape painting in the 19th century.
Tidsrom: 05.04.2008 - 08.06.2008
Leonard Rickhard (born 1945) is one of Norway’s most talented painters. As well as having his work showcased at several of the most prestigious exhibition venues in Norway, many of these institutions have also acquired his work for their public collections – including Haugar.
Tidsrom: 19.01.2008 - 11.05.2008
Haugar Art Museum is delighted to announce ‘Mangfoldsåret 2008’. Between the 19th of January and the 12th of May 2008 we will run this acclaimed international exhibition focusing on the subject of Puberty.
Tidsrom: 12.01.2008 - 24.03.2008
Tidsrom: 10.11.2007 - 30.12.2007
For the last 20 years, the dominating motifs in Herdis Maria Siegert’s consistently black and white photographs have been landscape and natural forms. In some of the landscape images she has allowed the contours of man-made forms to create symmetrical patterns in the composition, but more usually the work of creating form is left to nature itself.
Tidsrom: 29.09.2007 - 16.12.2007
We are delighted to present at Haugar for the very first time, a major, representative exhibition of Jahn Ekenæs’ work. Like many other artists who carried on working in the style of 19th century painting, well into the 20th century, he was regarded as conservative and old-fashioned, and slowly but surely his work was forgotten. The National Galley in Oslo presented a major show entitled The Munich Exhibition in 2002, and this brought his work to light once again.
Tidsrom: 08.09.2007 - 28.10.2007
For this retrospective show at Haugar, we have chosen a broad cross-section of Inger Sitter’s comprehensive, consistent production, made during the last 40 years of her long career as a painter. We will also be presenting some of her latest work, made during the last couple of years. Inger Sitter was born in 1929, and is one of our most highly respected modernist painters. Since she was educated abroad, and has had extended periods of living abroad, she has come to be regarded as something of a continental “European” on the Norwegian art scene.
Tidsrom: 02.06.2007 - 16.09.2007
Kai Fjell is regarded as one of the foremost and original painters of the 20th Century. In Norwegian art history, he is seen as one of the major artists of the romantic expressionist movement. 2007 marks the 100-year anniversary of his birth and we will honour this special occasion with a major exhibition at Haugar, focussing in particular on his painting from the end of the 1930s to the beginning of the 1950s. Kai Fjell grew up in Skoger, near Drammen, but later in life his work was influenced by the areas around Elverum and by Flatdal in Telemark. The landscapes and farms of these areas made a great impression upon him and his work shows the personal nature of his involvement with them.
Tidsrom: 16.06.2007 - 26.08.2007
Amongst the younger, figurative painters today, Sverre Bjertnæs (born 1976) has a commanding position. His breakthrough, at Bjarne Melgaard’s gallery Norsk Anarkistisk Fraksjon in 2000, paved the way for the widespread, well-deserved attention his projects and series of paintings have received. Sverre Bjertnæs began his career as a student of Odd Nerdrum, acquiring a solid insight into the craft and techniques of figurative painting. During his studies at the Academy of Fine Art in Oslo, he relinquished the ideals of “old master” painting and developed a softer, minimalist, almost photo-realistic style of painting.

Tidsrom: 28.04.2007 - 03.06.2007
Ever since Vibeke Tandberg (born 1967) made her debut in 1993 she has held a prominent position on the Norwegian art scene. She is also one of the young Norwegian artists that has been most internationally acclaimed – she has exhibited extensively abroad and her work has been acquired by many international museums.

Carl Oscar Schelbred will be fifty in 2007, and Haugar celebrates this anniversary by presenting a comprehensive exhibition of his work, spanning twenty years of his artistic output.
Carl Oscar Schelbred grew up in Sandefjord, and quickly gained recognition and a prominent position on the Norwegian art scene following his debut at Galleri 27 in Oslo in the mid 1980s, where he exhibited his imaginative drawings. His characteristic, figurative drawings, peopled with strange animals and naïve depictions of humans also became characteristic for his paintings. His paintings often depict young people placed in settings that are reminiscent of the streets, woods and skerries of his home town. The dark tones of his paintings mediate a quiet, melancholy ambience, which inspired one critic to describe his paintings as “elegiac surrealism”.
Tidsrom: 13.01.2007 - 18.02.2007
Olav Orud (born 1942) has never allowed his work to be constricted by the use of specific materials, styles, or the differing trends within the field of contemporary art. This retrospective view of his versatile oeuvre allows us to become better acquainted with an unconventional artist who has made a marked contribution to Norwegian sculpture.
Tidsrom: 12.10.2006 - 30.12.2006
Bjarne Melgaard (b. 1967) lives in Berlin and is considered as one of Norway’s most significant profiles in international contemporary art. He has shown his works in a number of the most important museums in northern Europe and he is been collected by just as many institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His installation at Haugar Art Museum will be his first show in Norway since the 2003 exhibition SHAME in Bergen 2003. Last autumn he presented his new paintings in his gallery in Stockholm under the title SNUFF MOVIES, a theme he has worked on regularly in Berlin and which will be continued at Haugar.
