This exhibition addresses the topic of death as a taboo theme in our time and presents a number of Norwegian and international artists who have approached the phenomenon from varying angles. Some express the feeling of loss and grief when someone close passes away; others train the spotlight on the situation and status of old age, or reflect on our attitudes to the often inconceivable act of suicide. Some works also poses the hopeful question of whether there is anything on the other side; whether there is life after death.

DEADLY SERIOUS offers the first coherent presentation of the many different trends that were prevalent on the Norwegian art scene of the 1980s. The exhibition sums up and puts into perspective both the expressive diversity and the radical changes that Norwegian art experienced during this decade. Photography finally made its breakthrough into art while international movements such as Conceptual Art, Land Art and Arte Povera also established themselves. Another major influence was the wave of more figurative and neo-expressionist paintings that swept across Europe.
